What Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month?

What’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month?

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a nationwide effort to increase awareness about sexual assault, educate people and communities on how to avoid sexual assault, and supply resources for survivors. It is usually observed in May. This is the month of the first National Sexual Assault Symposium along with the first national sexual assault survey since the Sexual Assault Awareness Act was passed into law in 1990. During this age, organizations across the country are required to supply one sexual assault awareness program to each school and community complex that they function.

Every year, organizations may opt to concentrate on sexual assault awareness month. This is excellent because it allows survivors who may not otherwise get out and talk about their experiences to be discovered and supported by others. There are also support groups that allow survivors to discuss their stories freely with like-minded men and women.

The aims of Sexual Assault Awareness Month would be to empower the community, educate community members, and also increase the sense of violence against girls and women nationally. Every year, thousands of new survivors are assaulted. But due to the absence of resources for all these crimes, it’s often not possible for survivors to file charges or hold perpetrators accountable. In response to this, the Department of Justice is now devoting resources to work on increasing current statistics on reported sexual assaults and preventing future crimes from happening. This will indicate the beginning of a new prevention month.

Power of silence: Confuse them with your silence

Sometimes it’s better to remain quiet then to say something wrong. Successful Leaders know how to use silence as a tactic for speaking up for themselves and as an opportunity to lead. Silence can yield more power than words. Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence. Inventor and artist Leonardo da Vinci said, “Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence.”

In an increasingly loud and stressful world, more people are discovering the benefits and power of silence. Quiet pauses throughout the day can connect us, ease our minds and put us in touch with ourselves. Experts agree that we need to choose to make silence a part of our lives. Maybe it’s by taking a moment to remember a loved one, waking up before the sun rises or replacing a noisy time of day with a calming break.

“Silence can benefit us if we use it wisely,” says Julie Potiker, a mindfulness expert and author of the new book, Life Falls Apart, But You Don’t Have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos. “If we allow the quiet to slow us down and open us up to what is there in our environment—a dog barking, a bird chirping—it means focusing attention on what you are hearing, which can stop your mind from ruminating and worrying.”
